Before you book one of our Mousehole holiday cottages, you need to know one thing. The name of this beautiful little resort is pronounced ‘mowzul’. Now that’s cleared up, let’s begin. Arriving in this sleepy fishing village is a little bit like stepping into a fairytale. Found just three miles from Penzance, Mousehole is one of those destinations where time seems to stand still. Boats bob in the harbour, waves lap the beach and cafes serve the catch of the day. If you want to experience the Cornwall of days gone by, this is the perfect place to do it.

Did you know? A local’s guide to holidays in Mousehole…

Mousehole attractions

Our Mousehole cottages tend to get booked up in the run up to Christmas, and that’s because people flock to see the famous Mousehole Lights. The festive season sees illuminations light the village, and the results are unforgettable. The entire village blazes with colour, as lights shine in the harbour, above the cobbled streets and on the surrounding hillsides. A short break to take in the spectacle is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit, and it’s an experience like no other.

No matter what time of year you visit, one of Mousehole’s biggest attractions is its picturesque harbour. Wander the narrow streets that lead to the harbour and take in some of the art galleries. Treat yourself to a coffee and a slice of cake, and just enjoy the atmosphere. We would advise that you leave your car at your Mousehole cottage if you head to the harbour, as those narrow streets don’t leave too much room to manoeuvre!

Mousehole has so much history to its name that you can almost feel it in the air, so why not learn the area’s stories with Mousehole Heritage Walks? Private walking tours are available in advance, and the friendly local guide will ensure you don’t miss a thing during your stay.

Beaches in Mousehole

Mousehole is home to two beaches, and they’re just big enough to enjoy some time on the sand while you take in the views. The harbour has a small, sandy beach that’s about the right size for little ones to have a go with their bucket and spades. Although you’re probably best off heading to one of the region’s bigger beaches if you’re after a full beachy day, this one’s just right for a picnic in the sun between adventures.

If you do put a day aside for the seaside, you’ll find some of Cornwall’s famous beautiful beaches just a short drive from your Mousehole holiday cottage. Long Rock Beach sits just between Penzance and Marazion, and it’s loved by visitors and locals alike. This beach is easily accessible and has safe, shallow waters ideal for swimming. There’s a seasonal dog ban, and lifeguards operate during the summer.

If you’re more of a sleepy cove family than a big wide beach clan, head to Lamorna Cove. Tucked beside Penzance’s harbour, this little cove has a pebble beach when the tide’s out. It’s popular with swimmers, although there are no lifeguards on this stretch of coast.

Mousehole restaurants

It’s easy to while away whole days in Mousehole’s winding streets without really doing anything at all. This is the kind of place where life revolves around the tide times and the fresh catch of the day, so there’s plenty of opportunity to ditch the diet during your stay.

Let’s start with 2 Fore Street. Perched right beside the harbour, this busy little bistro offers beautiful coastal views and the best seafood you’ll have tasted in years. Whether you take your time over a leisurely lunch, or you make an evening of it while you watch the sun set, this is one of Mousehole’s best-loved spot for a bite.

Now, we know you’ll be after a go-to deli for those Cornish essentials during your stay in a Mousehole holiday cottage, and it’s got to be the Mousehole Deli. This is one of those deli’s you’ll keep popping back to, and it serves up fresh bread, organic veg and everything you need for those picnics. You can’t miss it, it’s right beside the harbour.
