Centred around a 900 acre estate, this gorgeous slice of rural Cornwall feels a gazillion miles away from bustling city life and if you’re looking for somewhere to spend family holidays in the outdoors, there’s no better place for it!

Lanhydrock Estate

Best known for its amazing gardens and beautiful historic house, the National Trust owned Lanhydrock Estate is a must-visit destination for anyone holidaying in the area. Think picnic spots under shady trees and riverside ambles to the sound of local birdlife, with its wealth of wood and parkland this is a place you can make an entire day of. If you’re a keen cyclist (or a novice for that matter) you can pack light because the estate offers a fleet of mountain bikes for hire in both adults and kids sizes.

There are various routes to choose from so if the thought of donning lycra and embarking on a plethora of hilly climbs is not for you, there are flat woodland routes to take that will leave you looking and feeling as fresh as a daisy for your lunch date after. Visitors with four-legged furballs in tow will discover a wealth of walking spots to enjoy from open fields and parkland to wooded trails and riverside gambols. They’ll need to stay on their leads though but with so much fresh territory to sniff out, there’s little chance of them not enjoying every single minute.

A family-oriented experience, the estate is full of fun activities to delight in, so parents, you’ll be able to relish a bit of sit-down time while the kids burn off some steam. Discover the history of the family who lived at Lanhydrock and be sure to visit the newly refurbished nursery suite that offers stories about the Agar-Robartes children and a chance for play and interaction. Pack a picnic and laze the afternoon away or wander round the garden at your own pace and take in the sights of the colourful bursts from blossoming flowers and shrubs in full bloom.

Bodmin Moor

There’s more outdoorsy adventure to be had close by, only this time it’s just 13 miles away on the tor-strewn granite moorland of Bodmin Moor, in an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty. Heather and grasses carpet its vast landscape where moor ponies graze in solitude (relatively disinterested in passers by), and tors tower overhead, beckoning visitors to climb their enormous frames for 360 degree views of the countryside and coast.

More than a hundred Bronze Age hut circles have been excavated on the slopes of Rough Tor, along with a Neolithic Tor Enclosure and the foundations of a Medieval chapel so there’s an air of mystery that captivates the imagination. And if you fancy a roaring fire with delicious pub food after your day exploration, Cornwall’s most famous smuggling inn, the Jamaica Inn in nearby Launceston, will leave you feeling heartily satisfied.

Beaches in the area

You may be in the middle of the countryside, but the beauty of being anywhere in Cornwall is that you’re never more than 30 minutes drive from the coast. Equidistant of both the north and south coasts of the county means there are many beautiful beaches to choose from and if some of the members of your family are of the furry four-legged kind, then you’ll want to head to Trebarwith Strand which is dog-friendly all year round.

Huddled against the high cliffs of the north Cornish coast this sandy beach is something of a looker but you’ll need to check the tides before setting off as it is completely covered at high tide. Another favourite but this time on the south coast is the Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide’s recommended Par Sands. Also welcoming dogs all year round, its golden sand is edged by dunes, with clean, clear waters that are safe and shallow for a fair distance.
