Things to do in Penzance

There may no longer be real pirates running amok in the town’s streets but stunning gardens, beautiful beaches and historic landmarks make Penzance holidays adventure-filled and fascinating nonetheless.

West Cornwall’s mild annual climate has seen the planting of a variety of sub-tropical gardens, the most prominent being that of Morrab Gardens, one of the largest of its kind in Europe and a veritable oasis in the heart of Penzance. Visitors are invited to stroll through the grounds and take in the array of plants, colours and artistic impressions.

Penzance is ideally situated on the coast, and as such is within just a short distance of the many fantastic beaches in the area including Longrock, Marazion, Whitesands Bay at Sennen, Porthcurno and Pedn Vounder beach.

  • What are holidays in Penzance like?

Aside from being in the perfect position along the Mounts Bay coast to enjoy the many wonderful beaches in the area like Marazion, Sennen, Praa Sands and Porthcurno, the town itself has granite buildings and two central parks as well as a thriving artistic community, boutique-style shops and fab eateries which means plenty to both see and do.

  • Does Penzance have a beach?

Yes, it does! Penzance Promenade Beach stretches for roughly a mile along the length of the Promenade and is backed by the South West Coast Path. A little further along from here is Longrock Beach which is super dog-friendly and about halfway between Penzance and Marazion. If you don’t mind driving, Gwenver Beach is a stunning sandy cove about 15 minutes from Penzance, while the stunning Porthcurno is only 20 minutes.

  • How to spend a day in Penzance?

We’ve already mentioned its terrific beaches, but there is plenty more to do in the coastal town than lazing on the sand. Walk the completely flat path to Marazion with views of St Michaels Mount. Enjoy delicious grub at The Alverne, Boatshed or Dolphin Tavern. Stroll around the beautiful Morrab public Gardens. Visit an art gallery. Wander down Chapel Street and take in the fascinating architecture and historic buildings or peruse the town’s independent shops like Circa 21 and Handworked.
