Why the South West is great for dog-friendly holidays

Here in the beautiful South West, we’re blessed with miles of pristine coastline, the South West Coast Path, two national parks, and seemingly endless verdant countryside, which together form a wonderful playground for outdoor adventure and relaxation.

Ideal as a destination for family getaways, the South West is as terrific for those with furry family members in tow, so it comes as no surprise that dog-friendly stays in this gorgeous county are a firm favourite for anyone eager to trade daily life in for a dose of fresh air fun and escapism.

If you’re hunting for luxury accommodation with dogs, you’ll be pleased to know that our dog-friendly cottages are never far from some of the area’s best beaches and coast paths so you can enjoy plenty of outings with wagging tails leading the way. Plus, as a region whose locals love their canine companions, you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly pubs, cafes and attractions to keep both you and your dogs entertained the rest of the time.

Dog-friendly beaches in the South West

Of course, a dog-friendly holiday is all about walks and wanderings in the fresh air and what better place than on a gorgeous beach with swathes of sand for running free.

The beaches along the Cornwall and Devon coastlines are simply perfect. From dune-backed golden sands to miles of shingle and more. These are some of our favourite dog-friendly beaches:

Saunton Sands

This fabulous beach in North Devon near Braunton. Sand dunes back the beach which creates even more fun for canines keen to sniff and explore.

Watergate Bay

Just a short drive from Newquay, this huge beach welcomes dogs all year and is ideal for long walks, especially at low tide.

Harlyn Bay

Just outside Padstow, Harlyn Bay is a wide, sandy beach that’s popular with surfers and which also welcomes dogs 365 days per year.

Porthkidney Beach

This beautiful beach in Hayle is a favourite for dog walking and is known for its soft sands and gentle dunes. It’s less crowded than some of the nearby beaches and offers stunning coastal views.

Slapton Sands

Spanning three miles, this shingle beach is in Start Bay and fronts the small coastal village of Torcross in Devon. Its beautiful surroundings include the Slapton Ley Nature Reserve which lies opposite.

Putsborough Sands

The perfect dog-walking beach if you’re on holiday in Woolacombe, it lies on the south end of the town and allows dogs all year round. Known for its beautiful dunes and surf, it’s a fantastic spot for dogs and offers stunning views across the bay.

Dog-friendly places to eat in the South West

For most of us, dining out and sampling local food is a holiday’s highlight, so when it comes to a dog-friendly holiday, you’ll want to know that there are a good variety of dog-friendly pubs and restaurants nearby.

Thankfully, the South West bursts with eateries that welcome their four-legged guests as warmly as those with two, and it’s not unusual to find doggy treats like ice cream and beer (yip) on the menu. Many of the team here at Luxury Coastal are dog owners, too, so we’ll be happy to recommend the best places for a dog-friendly Sunday lunch, beachside café, or somewhere to refuel after your Dartmoor dog walks.

If you’re on vacation with your furry pal, you’ll want to know where your nearest dog-friendly pubs and restaurant are. Our LC Loves Local guides showcase some of the best local businesses to help you and your pets make the most of your time away.

Dog-friendly escapes in the South West

We know a home from home should be equally as comfy for your canine companions – they’re part of the family. Our collection of holiday homes that welcome dogs spans a variety of property types. Couples looking to take a romantic break for the weekend will love our pet-friendly lodges with hot tubs in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. While families in search of a seaside escape can choose from one of our dog-friendly cottages by the sea in some of the South West’s most sought-after coastal towns and villages.

FAQ’s for dog-friendly holidays

  • Where is the best place to holiday with a dog in the South West?

This will depend entirely on the kind of dog friendly holiday you have in mind as the South West has such a variety of landscapes that you can pretty much take your pick. Some favourites include Cornwall’s north coast for its all year round dog-friendly beaches like Watergate Bay and Holywell Bay, or towns in South Devon where long South West Coast Path routes abound. Devon also offers both Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks, so if your dog and you love to climb tors or traverse wide open spaces, it’s ideal.

  • What should I bring for a dog friendly holiday?

We’d always recommend bringing your own doggy towels as your self-catering property will only provide bath and hand towels for humans. Most of our properties will provide feeding bowls but it’s always a good idea to bring along a spare, and you’ll want to bring along your pet’s bed so he can get nice and comfy during your stay.

  • Do all your dog-friendly cottages have enclosed gardens?

We’d always recommend double checking the details provided for each property’s outside space on our website before making your choice as gardens are not always completely enclosed, especially if a dog is a particularly wily escape artist. Of course our team are on hand to help you find the perfect property for your and your dog’s needs.

  • Can dogs go on furniture in pet-friendly accommodation?

Unfortunately not for a number of reasons including damage to sofas and soft furnishings as well as hygiene. We do inform guests of this prior to a stay so that all visitors are kept up to date with our house rules.

  • Do dog friendly self catering cottages allow cats?

In most cases not however our team are more than happy to pass the request on to an owner as some properties may be fine with your felines.
