Things to do in Dartmouth

Famed for its Royal Naval Academy and 600 year old castle, Dartmouth has become synonymous with all things nautical, enticing members of the boating fraternity to this stunning slice of the River Dart for decades. Peppered with boutiquey shops and good restaurants, the town bustles with activity; its narrow, winding streets lined with historical buildings and gorgeous homes.

Just a ferry hop across the river takes visitors to the picturesque village of Kingswear on the opposite river bank, with Torbay, its beaches and attractions, within easy reach. In the opposite direction through the town, lies a stunning stretch of coastline that meanders past tiny villages and beautiful beaches. Grab a bite to eat at the iconic Venus Cafe on Blackpool Sands beach or stop off for a cream tea at Stokeley Farm shop in Torcross, before heading to the town of Kinsgbridge and on to Salcombe.

Dartmouth has a full calendar of events with something interesting or exciting happening throughout the year. Some of its best-known events are the music and food festivals, and the prestigious regatta.

Dart Music Festival
Taking place in May, this free three day town-takeover showcases over 100 live music acts across various genres including folk, jazz, rock, blues and orchestral. As well as loads of street food stalls there are many other events to look forward to like dance displays and workshops.

Dartmouth Royal Regatta
This week-long event which takes place in August is one of the UK’s top picks for competitive sailing and rowing, along with every sea and river-related activity under the sun. The whole town heaves with excitement and vibrancy as the streets bustle with visitors of all ages, looking to experience the atmosphere of this fantastic event. Highlights include the Kontiki Raft Race, Royal Regatta River Parade, Crabbing Competition, and of course the various sailing and rowing races.

Dartmouth Food Festival
Taking place in October, the Dartmouth Food Festival is a celebration of all things foodie by showcasing local food producers, celebrity chefs and eateries. This top-notch, highly popular event has workshops, wine seminars, tastings, competitions and cooking demonstrations as well as more than 100 (mostly Devon-based) exhibitors. Free to visitors, this is a ‘not to be missed’ event for anyone who loves a buzzing atmosphere and delicious food.

Where to stay in Dartmouth

With river vistas on constant display, Dartmouth is a dream destination for a holiday on Devon’s south coast. You may wish to soak up the views all day long from the comfort of your holiday home so of course, a waterside property will be perfect, or perhaps a cottage set back from the river with a private garden for your canines. If however you’d prefer to be slightly out of town where there’s less action and yet still be within easy reach of the town’s shops and restaurants, a great option is nearby Stoke Fleming (under 10 minutes’ drive) or Strete (around 15 minutes) – both quiet villages with a relaxing coastal atmosphere.

  • Is Dartmouth in Devon?

    Yes, Dartmouth is in the south of Devon and is part of the South Hams district which lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It lies on the on the western bank of the River Dart. On the opposite, or eastern bank, is the village of Kingswear, and the two are connected by ferries.

  • Does Dartmouth have a beach?

    The town itself has a handful of stunning coves which can all be found along the section of the South West Coast Path that runs from Dartmouth Castle. Castle Cove Beach is right next to the castle, Sugary Cove Beach is about a 3-minute walk from the castle, and Compass Cove is about 20 minutes’ walk. These coves are small and secluded, so perfect for a dip or for a spot of relaxation. However if you’re looking for a bigger beach with plenty of space then Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands are wonderful options.

  • Is Dartmouth nice for kids?

    With plenty to see and do in the area, Dartmouth is a great destination for family holidays. The South West Coast Path sits on its doorstep so you’ll be able to pick your route, whether a gentle walk around Dartmouth Castle, or a longer route right along the coast. There are many big, sandy beaches in the area too like Blackpool Sands, Slapton Sands, Broadsands Beach and Bigbury. Woodlands Theme Park lies a 15-minute drive from the town, and there are two terrific National Trust houses to visit in the immediate area – Coleton Fishacre and Greenway House.

  • Does the Dartmouth ferry run every day?

    There are two ferries that cross between Kingswear and Dartmouth – the higher and lower ferries. The Dartmouth Higher Ferry is a foot passenger and vehicle cable ferry which operates 365 days a year (please check times online). Dartmouth Lower Ferry is located at the steam train terminus. It is operated using a floating platform pushed along by a tug and carries cars as well as foot passengers. It operates all year round except Christmas Day.
