A local’s guide to Wells holidays…

Things to do in Wells

Home to the oldest residential street in Europe, holidays in Wells are a time to discover and explore a fascinating history and it’s here that you’ll find the historic Vicar’s Close and the wonderful gardens of Bishop’s Palace.

Contrasting the old with the new, the city has a vibrant atmosphere with its own Artisan Corner, gorgeous shops, and a variety of restaurants lining its pretty streets; as well as many cultural events taking place each year including literary, food and film festivals.

Nearby are the famous Wookey Hole Caves; a fantastic display of show caves that are dramatically illuminated; as well as magical mirror maze, cave museum and mystic fairy garden to name a few.

Wells is roughly 35km inland from Weston Super Mare, and a similar distance south of Bristol and southwest of Bath. It lies on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills where they meet the Levels.

  • Are dogs allowed in Wells Cathedral?

Yes, but there are a few restrictions. Dogs must be well-behaved and remain on leads at all times. They are not permitted on any tour that goes above ground level which includes The Library. Guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs are welcome in the Cathedral at all times.

  • When is Wells Christmas Market?

This fabulous and hugely popular traditional Christmas market takes place around mid-December every year, with some 100 traders setting up stalls in Market Place and through to the Bishop’s Palace Green. Parking can be tricky at its peak so we suggest visiting the Wells Council website for more information on where to park as well as alternative means of transport.
