Budleigh Salterton is a beautiful town on the coast of the Jurassic Coast in East Devon – an idyllic spot for a seaside sojourn. Here you’ll discover a shingle shore lapped by calm water, the River Otter and its nature reserve, and a lovely selection of shops, restaurants and galleries to enjoy. Our weekend itinerary is a taste of life in Budleigh, designed to help you make the most of your time in this pretty part of the county.

Day 1: Exploring Budleigh Salterton

Morning

Begin your day with a scenic walk up and along the South West Coast Path, which offers stunning views of the sea and the red sandstone cliffs that the area is known for. Your walk can be as short or as long as you like, whether a stroll up to Jubilee Field, or the full 4 miles to Exmouth.

After your walk, stop in at Brook Kitchen on Fore Street for a decadently filled croissant or Full English, titled ‘The Big Breakfast’ on the menu.

The beach is just a short stroll from Brook Kitchen so you may feel like wandering over to soak up the sunshine, views and atmosphere.

Afternoon

Take a two minute drive to Lime Kiln car park and from there you can explore some of the picturesque Otter Estuary Nature Reserve. You don’t need to be an avid birdwatcher to appreciate the many visiting and resident bird varieties here, but those who are may be able to spot Curlews, Sandpipers, Plovers and Redshank. This is also a lovely spot to simply unwind and enjoy the scenery.

If you’re peckish, and partial to seafood, Rockfish Seafood Café sits on the edge of the shore and is a 7ish minute walk from the car park. Try the battered fish and chips, crispy Bay Squid or mussels. You’ll have a wonderful view of the sea as your backdrop.

Evening

On your way out to dinner, take a leisurely stroll around Budleigh, especially the High Street and Fore Street where you’ll find independent shops selling antiques, clothing, art and gifts.

For dinner, we suggest a delicious pizza, pasta or meat dish from Marco’s Italian restaurant at no. 7 on the High Street which has excellent ratings and is a local favourite.

Day 2: Budleigh’s Local delights

Morning

Pop down to West End Kiosk on the seafront for a coffee and toasted bagel breakfast. If you’re visiting between May and September, we’d suggest a fabulous tour around Lily Farm Vineyard where award-winning still and sparkling wines are produced. They guide visitors through the vine’s life cycle, from planting to harvest, and explain their year-round care methods. They also share insights into English wine and its growing reputation. You’ll get to taste four of their fantastic wines and maybe but a few bottles to take home.

Afternoon

Enjoy a few hours at Otterton Mill, which is set on the bank of the tranquil Otter River. On milling days, you can watch the process of making stoneground flour and talk to the millers about how the mill works. The fabulous craft centre has a selection of handmade items, including pottery and textiles, ideal for browsing or picking up a gift. Finish your visit with a delicious lunch and/or decadent cream tea at their award-winning café, featuring freshly baked scones, clotted cream, and jam.

Evening

Savour an evening stroll and watch the sun set on Budleigh’s beach before dinner at Salterton Arms. This gastropub serves traditional pub food in a friendly atmosphere and is a great place to round off your stay with a bit of local flair.
