Things to do in Wedmore

Located just outside the village, Wedmore Golf Club offers an 18-hole course with well-kept greens and scenic views across the countryside. There’s also a welcoming clubhouse where players and visitors can relax.

The village is close to the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (OANB) which is ideal for walking, hiking, and cycling. There are plenty of trails that take you through woods, open fields, and up to viewpoints with wide views of the landscape. This is a popular spot for birdwatchers too with opportunity to see resident birds of prey including owl and hawk varieties like Tawny and Long-eared owls, the Hobby, Goshawks and Red Kites.

Wedmore has a rich trading past with markets dating back to the 1500’s, and the village is peppered with interesting historic landmarks and architecture including the 15th Century St Mary’s Church with parts dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. A short drive away is Ashton Windmill, a restored 18th-century flour mill on a raised ridge known as the ‘Isle of Wedmore’, with views over Cheddar Gorge and The Levels.

Nearby, the National Trust’s Stourhead Estate is home to Alfred’s Tower which stands 160ft high and boasts views over Somerset, Cornwall and Devon. The folly was built in the early 18th Century on the site where it’s believed that King Alfred the Great rallied his troops.

Shopping in Wedmore

Wedmore has a great mix of independent shops, which help give the village its unique feel. Wedmore Village Stores is the local go-to for groceries and essentials. Hector’s Family Butcher and Farm Shop sells fresh, locally sourced produce including meats, deli goodies, fresh bakes and farm produce.

The Pumpkin Delicatessen is popular place to pop in for coffee, tea and cakes, with a fully stocked deli of cheeses, charcuterie, olives, patés, homemade cakes, quiches & tarts.

There are also several specialist shops in the village. The Pet Boutique has treats and accessories for pets. The Little Grey Rabbit is a small homeware and furniture shop with a focus on vintage and upcycled pieces. Pisces is a fishmonger offering a fresh selection of seafood. Art lovers can check out The Cottage Gallery, which features work from local artists. And just outside the village, Lemon Tree Antiques is full of interesting antiques and collectables.

 

Eating Out in Wedmore

For food and drink, Wedmore offers plenty of choice. The George Inn which is housed in one of the village’s oldest and most prominent buildings, serves a variety of menus including its deliciously elevated sandwiches, main a ’la carte menu, and Sunday lunch. The Swan is a busy pub in the heart of Wedmore where its ‘simple, unfussy, fresh food’ has won chef Sam Sperring-Trendl and his team several awards including Gold for Taste of the West.

If you’re in the mood for a modern take on authentic Indian food, Table Eight serves delectable dishes in a fine dining atmosphere while Bluebird Cafe and Bar is a relaxed spot for breakfast, lunch, pizza, cake or a drink in the evening with live music.
