Huddled at the foot of one of England’s most spectacular natural landmarks, Cheddar is a small village that offers far more than its cheese. With its famous Cheddar Gorge, tea rooms, caves and walks, it’s the perfect place for a short nature-infused Somerset holiday.
Morning
Start your day with a hearty brekkie at Cheddar’s famous Lion Rock Tea Rooms – a yummy way to energise yourself for your walk. The start of the 4-mile route is right alongside the restaurant and begins with a walk uphill of about 20 minutes. The path is uneven and can get slippery in the wet so do make sure you’re wearing proper walking boots. Along the way, keep an eye out for the resident wild goats! Once you’ve reached the top of the gorge, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the undulating rockfaces below, as well as the countryside beyond.
If you don’t fancy the full 2ish hour walk, you can tackle Jacob’s Ladder—274 steps that lead you up to a lookout tower. It’s a short but punchy route, perfect for those wanting a bit more of an ‘instant’ experience.
