Welcome to Marazion – a small, ancient market town on the coast of Mounts Bay in Cornwall, famed for its stunning island castle that perches just off-shore.
Besides having a gorgeous beach, fabulous views and a lovely atmosphere, Marazion is just a hop and a skip from places like Sennen, Mousehole and Porthcurno, which means visitors get to enjoy the best of either a mellow home-based stay, or a further-flung adventure.
Our 48-hour itinerary includes some of our favourite things to do both in Marazion itself as well as the surrounding area, so whichever style of getaway you’re after, we hope you have a fantastic stay.
Morning
Breakfast at The Copper Spoon
Start your day with a delicious takeaway coffee and a home-baked pastry (sweet or savoury) from The Copper Spoon. This lovely little café on the corner of Fore Street and Leys Lane has an excellent reputation, and while there’s no seating in the café itself, you’ll find plenty of benches in the area where you can take a few minutes to enjoy your breakfast in the sunshine.
Visit St Michael’s Mount
After your coffee, stroll down to Marazion’s main beach and if the tide is low you can walk along the cobbled causeway to St Michael’s Mount (about 15 minutes). During the Spring and Summer, a boat service to the island is available however the mount is only accessible during the off-season via the causeway when the tide is low. Once there you can explore the castle and its beautiful surrounding gardens, with stunning views back towards the coastline.
Lunch at Shutter Restaurant
Back on the mainland, treat yourself to a leisurely lunch at Shutters at The Godolphin. The restaurant offers fantastic views over the beach and St Michael’s Mount, with a menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. When it’s warm and sunny you can opt to sit out on the terrace and soak up the sun’s rays.
Afternoon
Walk to Penzance (option 1)
If you’d like to burn off lunch, why not stroll the flat and easy route along the seawall to Penzance which offers wonderful views across Mounts Bay. This walk along the South West Coast Path takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes’ each way, but fear not! You can take a break in Penzance before heading back to Marazion, and we suggest a pitstop refreshment at The Tolcarne Inn’s pub which can be enjoyed either outside or in.
Kayak in the bay (option 2)
If you’d prefer to stay home-based for the afternoon, spend your afternoon on the beach or take to the water with a kayak rental from Ocean High which is in Follyfield car park above the main beach (only operational during the summer season). Prices start from £15 for an hour hire of a single kayak, and wetsuits are available too for £7. Paddle the calm waters of the bay or hug the coastline where you may even catch a glimpse of the resident seals sunning themselves on the rocks.
