As we emerge from what’s felt like rather a long winter; thoughts of spring flowers, sunshine and fresh air, occupy our daydreams. Sea swims, short-sleeve walks, barbecues, and sundowners with friends feel tantalisingly just around the corner, along with (of course!) warm weather picnics with nothing but blue skies overhead.
Here are 5 of our favourite spots for enjoying an alfresco affair when staying in Devon and Cornwall.
This small, idyllic pebbly beach has beautiful views over the bay and Breakwater and is a great spot for swimming, relaxation and sunbathing. Take a perch above the beach and soak up the atmosphere – sunsets are particularly spectacular from this vantage point so make sure you pack plenty of food and stay on into the evening.
If you’re planning a trip to St Ives Bay in the spring, make sure you pencil in a stroll along the dunes that back the bay between Gwithian and Hayle, stopping off near Peter’s Point on the Upton Towans. This magical part of the county has spectacular views which you can soak up from your choice of picnic spot (of which there are many) just off coast path.
One of Devon’s prettiest portions of coastline, The South Hams is a must-visit day trip destination when staying in the south of the county. Here you’ll discover stunning beaches, lovely seaside villages and of course plenty of green space accompanied by sea views. A favourite place for picnics in the area, has to be the secret beach at Mattiscombe Sands. It’s a bit tricky to get down to but the grass-topped cliffs above make for a wonderful place to picnic while enjoying the views over Start Bay.
Polly Joke is a fantastic spot for a picnic, especially in late spring and early summer when a carpet of wild poppies adorns the clifftops in May and June. From here you’ll have stunning views over the sea and coast, and be just a short stroll from the clear waters that lap the sandy cove below.
One of Dartmoor’s best-loved places for family outings, this is a peaceful spot with plenty of open space and shady areas under tall trees. Having a picnic on the grass bank by the river is a relaxing way to soak up the scenery while children dip their toes into shallow streams and play on the grass. This spot is extremely popular during the school holidays so best to turn up early.
