We caught up with the team at Forthglade to find out their top tips for staycations with your four-legged friend throughout Devon & Cornwall.

Staycations

With the surge in staycations this year, we conducted some research to find out exactly what you love about a holiday with your dog and most importantly, where you think is the best place in the UK for a dog-friendly getaway.

Britain has long held the title as a nation of animal lovers, so it’s no surprise that 58% of people cite their dog as their best friend, with owners even resorting to making video calls and telephoning their pooches while on holiday (22%).

So, when it came to the UK’s favourite dog-friendly destinations, 34% saying Cornwall and 27% voting for Devon, that’s over 50%!. We thought we’d explore what makes these two beautiful destinations so perfect for a holiday with your canine companion.

It’s no surprise that 55% said that the reason that they holiday with their four-legged friend is because it makes them feel as though the whole family is together. We are in absolute agreeance with this stat, dogs are part of the family and a holiday wouldn’t be the same without them.

Cornwall

Cornwall has long been heralded as one of the most popular UK staycations so it’s no surprise that it’s one of dog owners’ top places to holiday with their dogs. With lots of dog-friendly beaches to choose from, such as Harlyn Bay in Padstow, the famous Fistral Beach in Newquay, and Seaton Beach in Looe, as well as pretty coastal towns and plenty of walks on offer, it’s not hard to see why Cornwall is such a favourite for our canine companions.

A favourite walk of ours is Poldhu to Mullion Cove (around 4 miles), that takes in some of the beautiful scenery along the Lizard, part of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Devon

Devon… the home of Forthglade, so naturally our top choice but here is why we think you’ll love a holiday to our beautiful home county too!

From the long stretching year-round dog-friendly sandy beach that is Saunton Sands in North Devon to the hidden enclaves of Soar Mill Cove and Wonwell in South Devon, there are gorgeous beaches aplenty across the county that welcome dogs all year. If you love the coastline but aren’t so keen on the beach, the South West Coast Path covers 90 miles of the North Devon coast and 104 miles of the South Devon coast just waiting to be explored. Full of quaint seaside towns and villages, beautiful beaches, and far-reaching estuaries, it’s a great way to get off the beaten track and out into the Devon countryside.

But, if inland hiking is more your thing, it doesn’t get much better than Dartmoor. A wild open moorland with a rich history, you and your dog will enjoy a huge variety of walks from hidden valleys to Tors (formed over 280 million years ago) with vistas that stretch all the way to the coastline. A favourite of ours is a walk around Haytor, with panoramic views from the top, keep a look out for the letterboxes, a tradition on Dartmoor that dates back 150 years.
