When it comes to a day at the beach Exmouth is one of the highlights of the East Devon coastline. Its golden sandy beaches are a huge pull for locals and tourists alike and along the seafront there are plenty of other options to keep everyone happy. It’s a place where I have spent a lot of time either growing up or as a parent entertaining my clan.

Concentrating on the beach, it’s always been a firm winner with my children and with a loose remit of what shall we do today, Exmouth is always one of their choices all year round. During summer months there are RNLI lifeguards patrolling the beach usually by the dunes, where there are beach volleyball courts marked out for public use. There are also public toilets dotted along the seafront which, with young children is always a godsend. Something to bear in mind is that Exmouth sits at the end of the River Exe estuary and certain areas can be challenging for bathing when the tide is coming in or out. To avoid the worry, we always use either the patrolled area or the areas between the lifeboat station and the Orcombe Point headland where the bathing conditions are usually very good.

Aside from the beach the seafront has benefited from a good deal of investment over the past few years. It has a lot to offer from a range of eateries for all budgets, to ice creams stores and amusements. On days with poor weather Ocean soft play is always a great option to keep the kids active and occupied. Unlike most of the soft plays I use with the kids this one has plenty of natural light and offers direct views out to sea and across to Dawlish Warren. Within the Ocean complex there is an amusement arcade and bowling as well as a licensed restaurant. It can be a gem on a day when outdoor activities aren’t possible.

The Queen’s Drive Space on the seafront has also recently been created to offer entertainment and events during the spring and summer seasons. There is a free Jurassic themed play park as well as a seating area to enjoy a picnic or during the summer months we utilise the regular food and drink events and offerings in the area to enjoy some of the best produce Devon has to offer. There are also regular events in the Space from live music to cultural events such as screening of ballet and opera.

Generally, there is a lot to do all year round and over the past few years the variety of these offerings has only expanded. Exmouth sea front has always been a favourite destination of mine and it keeps getting better and better. If you’re in the area you really should stop by and enjoy what Exmouth has to offer.
