Like most families, my clan are dotted around the country only meeting up for those special occasions, so we decided that this would be the year for our first holiday together.
All eyes turned to me to find the perfect pad for our multi-generation group. Living close to Dartmoor and with my family travelling from the Midlands and Yorkshire, a break on the coast was our top priority.
I must admit my family are a fussy bunch who had a long wish list for me to work to: the holiday must be in the first two weeks of August, preferably a short walk to the beach, four bedrooms (one suitable for two children), at least two bathrooms, parking for three cars, a big kitchen, outside space… the list went on.
Well, I have to say I came up trumps, Coast at Beachdown ticked all the boxes and was available for the dates we wanted!
Coast at Beachdown is one of 12 eco-homes just a short stroll from the beautiful Challaborough Beach in South Devon. Designed to make the most of the entertaining space, all four bedrooms are on the ground floor whilst the living and open plan kitchen /dining area is upstairs. The space was ideal for what we needed – plenty of nooks for quiet moments (we were 6 adults and 2 children) and a lovely large kitchen that opened out on to a big terrace for evenings altogether.
We were extremely lucky to have wall-to-wall sunshine for our entire week. We walked to the beach every day laden with food, body boards, stand up paddleboards, skim boards, bucket and spades… you name it, we had it!
The beach is a sheltered horseshoe cove, a little quieter than its neighbouring Bigbury with a chip shop, ice cream hut and pub right on the beach. You can also hire watersport equipment from ABC Sports who are based right on the beach.
We all love to be in the sea, so we spent our days swimming and paddle boarding; we even paddled around Burgh Island! It was fascinating to see the tiny caves and imposing rock formations.
If you prefer to stay on land, you can pick up the South West Coast Path from either side of the beach. Head towards Bibgury in one direction and Ayrmer Cove in the other. Both sections offer incredible views, especially at sunset.
There’s little reason to head out of the Bay however we did try The Journey’s End Inn for an evening meal. The most quaint village pub with friendly staff and incredible food: noodles, mussels, curry and burgers graced our plates. I would highly recommend a visit for anyone visiting the area.
We had so much fun at Coast, we are already planning our next trip.
