One of the greatest things about living in Devon has to be the array of scrumptious food on offer. From Michelin star restaurants and gastro pubs to cool street food vendors and pop-up festivals – Devon really does have it all.
The onset of autumn not only covers the region in beautiful colour but brings with it some of the best food festivals around. And one of my favourites is the Powderham Food Festival. I’m excited to hear that this year’s event promises to be one of the biggest in the Devon foodie calendar, with mini food and drink villages, a kid’s zone, live music, talk stage and demonstration tent… I can’t wait!
Let’s talk about the setting. Powderham Castle has provided the backdrop to the food festival for the last seven years. Nestled beside the picturesque Exe Estuary, with an ancient deer park in its grounds, there really isn’t a better spot. On a warm day, you can sit outside the castle and enjoy the scenic views and there’s no doubt you’ll see a deer or two!
Now, the food – the best bit! The region’s best loved food producers gather together to create a treat for the senses – cheeses, cakes, coffee, gin, to name a few.
Last year’s festival was bathed in sunshine which meant we were able to slowly wander around sampling all the wonderful produce. It’s always hard to choose a spot for lunch, but I was hooked in by Hook, Line & Fishmonger and their posh fish fingers in a box with red cabbage and pomegranate slaw, leaves, gherkins and dips. I have to say it didn’t disappoint. Then for dessert! There was so much choice, but I was taken in by a chocolate and orange tart – simply divine.
The festival is being held on the 5th and 6th October and you can buy tickets online or at the gate on the day.
My only tip is to make sure you arrive hungry. Enjoy – I know I will!
