On 30th May this year, the much anticipated The Salt Path will be hitting the UK’s big screens. Heart warming and thought-provoking, the story of Raynor Winn and her husband Moth (played by Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs) is a beautiful depiction of resilience and the transformative effect that nature can have on ordinary people.

Inspired by the memoir “The Salt Path” by Raynor Winn, this film notes the challenges and triumphs of a couple walking the South West Coast Path from Minehead in Somerset, all the way to Poole Harbour in Dorset – discovering peace and hope along the way.

The South West Coast Path stretches over 630 miles along the coast of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and Dorset, journeying through some of the country’s best coastal scenery, which film Director, Marianne Elliott has taken full advantage of.

Film locations in Cornwall include the unspoilt, dune-backed beach of Holywell Bay, Fistral Beach, Padstow, Rame Head and Bedruthan Steps, and in Devon and Somerset; Ilfracombe, the quaint village of Clovelly, Hartland Quay, Minehead, and The Valley of The Rocks on Exmoor.

One of the reasons the path is so special, and an aspect highlighted in the movie, is its accessibility to people from all walks of life. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker with a thirst for adventure, someone taking a quiet walk with your dog, or a person seeking reflection and solace in nature, you can enjoy it on your own terms.

The South West Coast Path’s own website offers detailed descriptions of walks in each county, and has a handy interactive map feature as well as walks categorised by degrees of difficulty. If you’re up for adventure, their Passport is a great way to challenge yourself or the family to walk as many routes as possible throughout the year, while collecting stamps at each checkpoint.

The Salt Path movie has shone a light on this remarkable resource, showing that the path isn’t just a physical trail. Whether you’re walking for personal reflection, with a sense of adventure, or simply to enjoy the sights and sounds of the coast, the South West Coast Path offers something for everyone.

As you walk along the path, you’ll discover more than just stunning views and dramatic cliffs. You’ll find a space to pause, breathe, and appreciate the world around you. The Salt Path is an inspiring reminder that there is always something magical about taking the time to reconnect with nature—and there’s no better place to do it than along the stunning South West Coast Path.
