If you spend time in the South West, we’re sure you love to walk, trek or meander the beautiful coast path as much as we do!
It’s no surprise then that the recent launch of the South West Coast Path Passport had us very excited. With its mapped route guidance and cleverly laid out check points we were eager to get our hands on it. And it seems many other like-minded people were too! It actually sold out was within 24 hours of its release on 26th July.
If the Passport is something new to you, we’d love to tell you more about it. What makes this little booklet such a lovely addition to your time spent exploring the coast, and why you should think about getting your very own copy.
In a nutshell, they are colourful pocket-sized books with an eco-craft paper cover. Walkers can have them stamped at various locations along the 630 miles of coast path.
The idea for the book was inspired by the world-famous ‘Camino de Santiago’ pilgrim Trail in northern Spain which encourages pilgrims to collect stamps as they walk to Santiago de Compostela.
The aim is to eventually have your entire book stamped. But this can take place over as long or short a period as you’d like; within a year or maybe over several years. There’s really no rush, as it’s all about getting out there and seeing as much of our beautiful coastline as possible.
The South West Coast Path Association which is the creator of the Passport, has partnered with over 100 businesses or Way Makers.
Local to each area, they offer stamping points on various sections of the path. These include Visitor Information Centres, museums, cafes, shops, and pubs.
So by stopping in for a refreshment or by visiting one of these businesses, users of the path will be supporting the local communities. A complete win-win if you ask us!
There are seven stamp designs reflecting the heritage, history or nature of the area it represents.
Ammonite for the Jurassic Coast
Wave for North Cornwall
Tin mine for West Cornwall
Lighthouse for South Devon
Moorland pony for Somerset & Exmoor
Seal for North Devon
Anchor for South Cornwall
Each stamp has been hand made by Marc Hoskins at Wild Work who also creates many of the coast path signposts and waymarkers along the coast path.
All in all the Passport is simply a wonderful way to discover new places and experience the range of awe-inspiring landscapes of our coastline.
If you’d like to purchase your own Passport they cost just £6.50 each and are available from the SWCP online shop on their website here. And if you’re interested in your business becoming a Way Maker please click here
