Seeking a slower-paced weekend adventure? The pretty North Devon village of Appledore is the place for it. There’s plenty to see and do, but without the crowds, so here’s how to make the most of your 48 hours in Appledore.
Morning
Enjoy a stroll around Appledore’s pretty, narrow streets. Take in beautiful views across the estuary from the Quay and stop in at Market Street Kitchen – one street behind the waterfront. They have a secret garden too which is a lovely place for sunshine dining. Pick up a fresh sourdough loaf or sweet bun to enjoy later from Appledore Bakery, then visit the North Devon Maritime for an interesting peek into the village’s maritime history.
Afternoon
Between April and October the Appledore Instow Ferry runs across the Taw–Torridge estuary to the village of Instow — a short, scenic trip that’s a ‘must’ at this time of year. Once there, take a tour of the beautiful Tapeley Park estate or make your way down to the waterfront for lunch or a cream tea at the long-standing family run John’s of Instow deli.
Alternatively, if you’re visiting during the winter months, drive to Westward Ho! instead for a walk along its 2-mile sandy Blue Flag beach where you’ll discover a natural tidal pool at the southern end of the beach. Enjoy fish and chips at Atlantic Bay with views over the beach.
Evening
For a small village, Appledore has a good selection of good restaurants. Choose between modern British fayre at The Royal George or wood-fired pizzas from Flame Factory on the quay.
Book a stay in AppledoreMorning
Start your day with a flat white from the Coffee Cabin on the waterfront. They do a lovely breakfast as well or if you like to start your day with something sweet, try one of their cakes.
Pop into Appledore Bookshop on Bude Street (2-minutes’ walk away) – open since 1979. High shelves of books line the walls, while a Theobalds Stove welcomes customers on cold days – bliss!
Afternoon
Explore the beauty of the scenery with a walk on the South West Coast Path from Appledore to Northam Burrows. The route is almost completely flat, starting Charles Kingsley’s ‘Little White Fishing Village’ in Appledore. The walk has views across the estuary and meanders through a landscape of grassy plains, salt marsh and sand dunes. You may even spot a free-roaming Exmoor pony or two.
After your walk unwind with lunch at Jack Sprats on Market Street – a cosy, newly opened bistro (was The Yard) serving delicious food including seafood chowder, ham hock and bubble & squeak.
Evening
Stroll along the quay and soak up the atmosphere as the sun sets on your weekend, then indulge in a fabulous pub dinner either at the 400-year old Beaver Inn or the fabulous Seagate Pub.
