Brixham is an ‘up and comer’… a picturesque fishing town, built on harbour life, fish and chips and being by the sea. It’s Devon’s home of the quintessentially British seaside holiday; buckets and spades, crabbing along the Marina and eating a Mr Whippy at the beach. All in a day’s work for Brixham!

Living in Brixham offers a slightly different viewpoint though, and there is more to our beautiful town than the more obvious (and equally brilliant) seaside holiday attractions! As a dog owner, you can spend hours and hours walking the rugged coastline around Berry Head, following the South West Coast Path down to quiet beaches such as Mansands, Scabbacombe…or in the other direction through the woods to Churston Cove, Elberry Cove and all the way to Broadsands, on the edge of nearby Paignton.

The Harbour bowl itself is a beautiful thing. Lined with rows of multi-coloured fisherman cottages, you can imagine the hubbub of the local fisherman packing up for the week and heading down to the quay to head out to sea. That in itself is a reminder of what Brixham is to the locals and visitors alike, a sense of nostalgia that you don’t need to have lived in Brixham to feel and soak up. What’s more, as times have gone by, you can be part of the local history and stay in one of the many character-filled fisherman cottages that line the harbour.

And food. The most important part. Whether you’re having brunch at the Curious Kitchen on Middle Street, fish and chips from Rockfish, Simply Fish or one of (my favourite) local chip shops, you can be sure to dine out on local produce and be just seconds from the sea.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a whippy, I love sitting on the beach when the sun makes its annual appearance and I particularly love seeing the local shops and attractions thrive during our busy season. But I also love Brixham when it quietens down, when I get the Breakwater back to me and my dog and get a nice cup of hot chocolate for a walk around the coast.

Making people feel at home is what we’re good at and we’re starting to make a name for ourselves.
