Where to catch the surf

Just a 10-minute walk from your front door, Fistral Beach is one of the UK’s top surfing destinations but is loved just as much by sunworshippers and families. It has a beautiful setting too and is backed by high cliffs and dunes, with the Headland Hotel forming an instantly recognisable landmark as it perches overlooking the sand.

Famous for waves that can reach between six and eight feet, the beach hosts several of the UK’s biggest surfing competitions including the National Surf Championships and Boardmasters Surf & Music Festival, but it’s just as good for beginners when conditions are calmer. Several surf companies have set up base right on the edge of the sand like Fistral Beach Surf School which offers both lessons and equipment hire.

At low tide, the beach exposes a collection of rock pools that are perfect for keeping young explorers entertained, and with several restaurants to choose from including Fistral Beach Bar, The Fistral Stable and the seasonal Sea Spray Fistral, the whole family can enjoy a delicious post-beach meal, with epic views over the Atlantic.
