Watergate Bay self-catering

The rugged North Cornwall coastline has long enjoyed a reputation for being a top destination for both holiday makers and water sporting fans alike; and quite rightly so. With its beautiful beaches, big Atlantic swell and epic nature-drenched scenery, this is a place that beckons you to get outside whether it be for adrenalin-charged sessions in the water or more laid-back adventures from the comfort of its shore.

Ask any North Cornish local and chances are they’ll each have a favourite dog-walking beach as well the reasons to back their choices up. And it is absolutely true. This section of the coast has so many stunning options for dog owners to enjoy that we wholeheartedly agree. If however we had to pick our top all-rounder, it would have to be Watergate Bay.

Ever popular with the surfing fraternity too, the beach break offers both left and right hand waves and is fairly consistent throughout the year with the quality of its waves unaffected by the tide, and there are beach-based activity centres and equipment hire companies, so anyone looking to get their feet wet will be able to take to the water without the need to bring their own wetsuits and kit down.

Watergate Bay dog-friendly

Like many of its Newquay counterparts, this sandy stretch allows unrestricted access to dogs all year round so not only do you get to enjoy a stunning break in one of North Cornwall’s best spots, but so does your canine. No matter the time of year, if get your tide times right you’ll have plenty of sandy beach to explore; 2 miles in fact, so if you’re looking for somewhere to let the four-legged kids run free it doesn’t get much better.

If you and your pups are feeling energetic, the surrounding area offers a handful of great walks that will leave you feeling like you’ve deserved your lunch. Walk the 3.5 miles into Newquay along the coastal path, which takes you past Whipsiderry, Porth Island, Porth beach, Lusty Glaze and Tolcarne, or at low tide you can walk sections of this route along the beaches below the town.

Watergate Bay restaurants

And on days when you feel like taking it easy, why not head to one of Watergate Bay’s popular eateries for a bite and a chill? The Beach Hut at Watergate Bay Hotel offers superb views over the sea as well as delicious light meals like fresh mussels, salads and tapas. Or there’s Wax Bar and Kitchen which also overlooks the beach and serves hand stretched pizzas, and burger stacks to name just a few. These and the nearby Travellers Rest and The Farmers Arms extend a warm welcome to both you and your dogs, so what better way to while the hours away.
