Devon’s beaches are undoubtedly some of the best in the UK and you’ll often find them gracing traveller polls citing the best beaches in the world.

Living in the South West is a joy, as is exploring the beautiful coves and beaches dotted around our coastline.

As I sit in my garden daydreaming about hazy summer days, I thought I’d share five of my favourite Devon beaches with you.

From an early age, my sister and I were bundled into the back of the family car at 3:00am, bursting with excitement for our annual pilgrimage to Devon and that’s where my love of the glorious South West began…

Even though I’ve been living in Devon for over 10 years, it doesn’t stop the sense of anticipation when I drive over the brow of a hill and glimpse a shimmering expanse of water in the distance. I can see the sea! I’m instantly back in the car, five years old, after three hours of playing eye spy and who can spot a bright green car (I’m showing my age now!).

Sit back, relax, and dream about the soft sand between your toes and the waves lapping the shore whilst I take you on a virtual tour to five of my must-see Devon beaches… enjoy!

Barricane Beach, North Devon

A short walk from the bustling sands at Woolacombe is the small but perfectly formed Barricane. A sheltered bay with crystal clear water and soft sand beneath your feet. This little beach comes alive on balmy summer evenings when the beach café serves the most delicious Sri Lankan curry, a must for any summer getaway.

Broadsands Beach, North Devon

This beach holds the accolade of being my favourite beach in Devon. I stumbled across the hidden gem by accident whilst walking the South West Coast Path. I remember it well. I came across the most mesmerising view down to a sheltered cove, with a single sailing boat shimmering in the sun. Following the path, we came to a sign ‘Broadsands Beach’ and the 236 steps to get down to the dreamy coves beneath, believe me, it’s worth it.

Croyde Beach, North Devon

A wide expanse of golden sand and rolling waves make Croyde one of the best surfing destinations on the North Devon coast. A firm favourite of mine, my nieces love to explore the rock pools, dance in the waves and play beach games until they are exhausted. Whether you’re a keen surfer or love to throw yourself in the foam on a bodyboard, you’re guaranteed a day full of adventure.

East Portlemouth, South Devon

The South Hams is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Devon. East Portlemouth can be found opposite the sailing mecca of Salcombe and offers sandy coves that are exposed at low tide and rock pools aplenty for the inquisitive souls in the family. The fantastic Venus takeaway café and shop is perched above the beach, serving delicious food and ice creams, you can also hop on the ferry across to Salcombe for a spot of crabbing on the quay.

Blackpool Sands, South Devon

Blackpool Sands in Devon is a picture-perfect bay where you’ll be treated to a large sweeping curve with gentle lapping waves and shingle underfoot. If like me you love to be in the water, you can hire kayaks and SUPs during summer months, perfect for exploring the alluring coastline. If you get hungry, the Venus Café is on hand to provide sustenance on a sunny summer’s day.
