Life by the coast and ice cream go together rather well. In fact, we’d go as far as saying that no holiday in Devon or Cornwall is complete without at least one cone in hand.

So, after personally sampling, as well investigating comments from other ice-cream lovers (a tough job, but someone had to do it), these are the five ice cream spots that consistently get rave reviews from us, and visitors.

Jelbert’s, Newlyn

An institution in Newlyn, if Jelbert’s isn’t on your Newlyn holiday agenda, it needs to be!

Serving ice cream the old-fashioned way for decades, Jelbert’s offers just one flavour, Vanilla…simple, honest, yummy, which explains the consistent queues out of the door.

Their famous clotted cream vanilla is reportedly unlike any ice cream you’ll taste. Add a dollop of Cornish clotted cream on top for extra decadence!

Delphini’s Gelato, Totnes

Tucked away on Totnes High Street, Delphini’s Gelato has developed something of a cult following in Devon. Regularly described by fans as some of the best gelato they’ve ever tasted, we have to agree – even the cones are handmade!

The Pistachio’s a dream, but if you love true flavours of Italy, the Tiramisu follows hot on its heels, with a bevy of beautiful sorbets on offer as well. Expect exceptionally friendly service to top things off.

Callestick Farm, Near Truro

Ice cream tastes even better when you can see where it’s made, and that’s all part of the experience at Callestick Farm.

If you love a huge choice of flavours and generous portions, this is the place – salted caramel, Cornish vanilla and honeycomb get our team’s stamp of approval. On the outskirts of Truro, this is a completely family-friendly farm venue, with cows milling in the back ground, and lovely rural views.

Moomaid of Zennor, St Ives

We dare anyone to visit St Ives without ending up outside Moomaid…

Made using milk from the family’s own herd, this ice cream is unbelievably creamy, and flavours range from traditional Cornish vanilla to more adventurous seasonal specials. The shop is right on the harbour so if you do have to queue, you can enjoy some of the best sea views in St Ives.

Moomaid also has kiosks and shops in Lelant, St Just, Porthtowan

Ruby’s Ice Cream, Fowey

In our opinion, Ruby’s is a must-visit stop for holidays in Fowey. This fabulous ice cream boutique gets praise for both quality and creativity, with some pretty imaginative flavour combos on the menu. They do a mean milkshake too.

Testament to just how good this place is, there can be long queues  during the summer, but who’s rushing?

Ruby’s also has shops in Mevagissey, Marazion and Newquay…
