Salt Loft is just the place you’ll want to call home when staying in this lovely seaside town; where original features compliment contemporary coast-inspired furnishing to form a space that’s as relaxing to be in as it is lovely to look at.

Set just a few metres back from the seafront, this authentic Cornish fisherman’s loft offers four guests a superb retreat away from the bustle of busy everyday life. Grade II listed, the cottage packs in original features by the bucket-load, and these combined with modern elements of a recent refurbishment create an idyllic luxury sanctuary to retreat to after days spent exploring the coast. Arranged over three floors, the first floor entrance to the property is through a stable door which opens into a whitewashed living room with stripped floor boards and original stone walls.

A sash window & seat nestles into the chunkiest of window reveals letting plenty of light in, overlooking the narrow harbour streets, while a low beamed ceiling and rustic hearth with period style stove add a warmth and cosiness to the space. The soft furnishings are understated and gorgeous with palette of neutral tones infusing a sense of calm and elegance. Downstairs on the ground floor a Shaker-style kitchen has been well thought-out in design to offer plenty of worktop space as well as make an inviting space to share conversations and mealtimes together. The cottage’s two bedrooms can be found on the top floor. Each room is the height of comfort with deep luxury mattresses fitted with high spec cool percale bed linen for the ultimate nights sleep & softest fluffy towels. The rooms have original floorboards, high pitched ceilings with exposed A frames, feature circular windows with sunken spotlights, with the master bedroom boasting sea views over the village to St Clements Isle and beyond.

Further afield and easily reached by car, lie the spectacular town and beach of Marazion in one direction, and Lamorna Cove and Pedn Vounder beaches in the other. A must-visit location on many a travel publication’s bucket list, Pedn Vounder Beach is just a twenty- minute drive away and has crystal clear turquoise water edging a crescent of fine white sand; perfect for days spent relishing the Cornish sunshine.

Adding to Mousehole’s repertoire of things to do and see in the area, the town’s pretty harbour is home to a handful of fantastic, shops, restaurants and cafes; and its terrific position on Cornwall’s south coast means that, just a short distance away are the likes of Porthcurno, The Minnack Theatre, Porthleven Harbour, St Michael’s Mount and St Ives.

    Security Deposit: We ask our guests for a £200 good housekeeping bond, which is pre-authorised against your card. This is in case there is any damage to the property during your stay. The money is simply reserved (held as a pending transaction) and then released afterwards if there is no damage or additional cleaning. This will be held on the card on file 7 days prior to your arrival.
    Pets: 1 pet allowed, £25 per pet per week, in line with our house rules we do ask that pets are not left alone in the property, do not use the furniture or go in the bedroom areas

    There is no allocated parking for this property. Guests can park in the road along The Parade which is free on a first come first service basis and is a short walk from the property.
    Mousehole has several car parks, however please note that the one closest to the property only accept coins so guests are advised to bring change with as there are no cash points nearby. If change is needed on arrival, the car park attendant at the South Harbour Car Park can offer change.
    The car parks closer to the town entrance tend to have higher charges so we suggest parking in the facility closest to the property.

    The Parade Car Park on the outskirts of the village is a privately owned facility so prices are subject to change however current charges (as of 2021) are £9.00 for an overnight stay. Please note that parking here is strictly monitored and even slight overstays are heavily fined. Please bear in mind that on-street parking is scarce as the village’s streets are very narrow. At very busy times when these car parks are full, the village of Paul which is located up a steep hill at the top of Mousehole Lane is an option however the walk up is strenuous.

Welcome to Mousehole

Before you book one of our Mousehole holiday cottages, you need to know one thing. The name of this beautiful little resort is pronounced ‘mowzul’. Now that’s cleared up, let’s begin. Arriving in this sleepy fishing village is a little bit like stepping into a fairytale. Found just three miles from Penzance, Mousehole is one of those destinations where time seems to stand still. Boats bob in the harbour, waves lap the beach and cafes serve the catch of the day. If you want to experience the Cornwall of days gone by, this is the perfect place to do it.

A mix of outstanding and challenging

We found the condition of the property, and its location, to be excellent. As other reviewers have noted, the compact footprint of the floor plan and its 3 levels instead of 2 can be challenging. Arrival info was hard to obtain, but when we reached out for help, the Luxury Coastal person who reached out to us on Sunday (day before arrival) was very helpful. Georgina the property manager/housekeeper also was very helpful, especially when the Portal and the Binder each said the wifi password was in the other and she told us where we actually could find it. She was also very helpful when we were checking out. So the major pluses of Salt Loft were its very central, walk-able location, the nice furnishings and quality of the interior, and the ability to regulate the temperature/climate of the cottage through opening/closing of windows. Very snug and comfortable. Major challenges were the small spaces and effort required to store one's things, and the frequent up-down on the stairs. As noted elsewhere, the ground floor shower is outstanding - really great - followed by 2 flights of stairs to go to bed. Regarding the public parking lots one must use, they were accepting credit cards during our stay, this should be noted. Overall, if I were to recommend, it would be with those caveats about the 3-level floor plan.

Charming cottage but lacking attention to detail

We enjoyed our stay in Salt Loft - it really is as charming as the photos suggest. As others have noted, the second bedroom and upstairs shower are a squeeze for adults but the main bedroom, kitchen, sitting room and downstairs bathroom are big enough. What let it down was the poor attention to detail, such as only 3 of the 6 lights in the downstairs bathroom were working, only 3 wine glasses (for 4 people!), only 6 clothes hangers in the wardrobe, no shower caddy in the downstairs shower (requiring a lot of bending over to relieve soggy soap etc), no decent rails in the bathrooms to hang bath towels to properly dry, the standard lamp in the sitting room could only be turned on at the plug (requiring more bending over), there were numerous reed diffusers but none had any oil in them, and several of the tourist brochures were well out of date. None of these things particularly detracted from our enjoyment of the cottage but they are not what I would expect to find in a property let by a business with the word "luxury" in its name and priced accordingly. Note that there are internal windows at high level between the two bedrooms with no blinds, so if the light is on in one bedroom during the night it will light up the other bedroom, which may be an issue for light sleepers. As other reviewers have noted, the seagulls are very noisy so best pack earplugs!

The electrics have now been checked and we are in the process of arranging an electrician to fix the outstanding issues. We aren't always informed of small breakages so we will ensure items are now inventoried along with keeping the reed diffusers topped up, there has never been a shower caddy but the owner has taken these comments on board and in the process of purchasing one. The owner will renew the tourist brochures when they are next in the property, a new welcome pack with up to date information has been printed out and we will ensure this is added to the folder. Lovely cottage in a perfect location

Salt Loft is ideally located, just a very short walk from Mousehole Harbour where there are some great restaurants and a very convenient bus stop should you wish to go to Newlyn or Penzance. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and, though it is fairly small, it has absolutely everything you should need. The main bedroom has the benefit of a sea view across the rooftops, the bed and bedding are very comfortable. The only reason for not having an excellent nights sleep was the noise from the seagulls, which started around 4am! The second bedroom is compact, ideal for little children , but I would say not great for adults. Small shower room on this floor too. Great kitchen and downstairs shower room with an excellent shower. We had a great time and would not hesitate to stay again.

Wonderful Mousehole stay

We adore Mousehole and this is our second stay at the Salt Loft. It suits us perfectly with 2 kids and is very central. Despite being on the road it is quiet. It is decorated tastefully and the only one downside is that the kitchen could be slightly better equipped for those who want to cook on holiday, but would absolutely recommend it and Mousehole as a place to stay and explore Cornwall

Perfect stay

I stayed in the cottage with my teenage daughters during half term and we were absolutely loved the cottage and Mousehole. Everything about it, inside and out was spot on. The cottage was immaculate, very, very comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped and just had all the little touches - coffee pods, all cleaning equipment, dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, soap in the bathrooms, loo rolls (have stayed in a few places where there's absolutely nothing) even a pint of milk and biscuits. Quality bedlinen and towels. Beds comfortable. Wonderful sea view over the rooftops from the master bedroom, amazing to watch the sunrise in the morning, whilst in bed. Bathrooms spotless. Plenty of hot water. The only point I'd make is that it's on 3 levels, kitchen and bathroom on the ground level, lounge in the middle, and bedrooms and bathroom on top floor. The stairs off the lounge to the kitchen are a little steep so I'd be mindful with little people (a stairgate would resolve this though and may well be available) or those with mobility concerns. My only small gripe would be stripping the beds is still a requirement, as in many places in Cornwall. I had no problem doing this during the pandemic but think it's time this was stopped. The location is a few steps away from the bustling harbour with a small array of independent shops and eateries, which were all open during our stay. The Ship Inn is a few steps away and where we ate every evening, the staff were welcoming and food was great too. The deli/bistro, by the harbour, is open all day and offers dine in and a takeaway service, wonderful morning croissants and lunchtime sandwiches and wine. There is no mini supermarket so bear that in mind for basics. We walked to the Co-op in Newlyn but it's along the main road, no through coastal path but lots of fresh fish and seafood available to buy. Larger supermarkets are a short drive away. Enjoyed exploring around the little lanes in Mousehole. Parked in the North car park by the harbour, plenty of spaces when we went but it can get a little congested in the narrow lanes. We did manage to find free street parking by the The Old Coastguard, which avoided negotiating the lanes. Easy to get to Lands End, Sennen Cove and St Micheal's Mount. Real little gem of a place and will return. Thank you

Lovely short stay

We stayed in Salt Loft for 4 days over a long weekend. The property is really beautiful and had everything we needed. It was stylishly decorated, comfortable and well-positioned for a number of trips further afield. From looking at other similar properties in the village, it was also very good value. We'd love to come back again.
