Overview

Set just a short walk up from the harbour and marina, The Retreat offers guests a fully kitted out and beautifully furnished holiday pad that’s within easy reach of the town’s restaurants, shops and beaches where all the family can enjoy the delights of coastal life in complete comfort. Inside, the home is light, bright, clean and spacious, with plenty of room for relaxation and socialising. Arranged over two floors, upstairs there’s a large open plan kitchen/diner, and living room which has sliding doors that lead on to a furnished balcony with sea views in the distance. The family bathroom with a separate shower and bath along with two generous bedrooms are also on this floor, both of which are tastefully styled and feature king size beds as well as plenty of storage.

Downstairs, the home’s third bedroom has ‘zip and link’ twin beds which can be made up as a king, to offer versatility to suit all guest parties. There’s also a cloakroom and utility as well as a movie room, with bean bags and a large flat screen TV where you can dim the lights, grab the popcorn and settle in for your very own cinema experience. To the back of the property, a terrific garden with decked patio, BBQ and dining suite means outdoor dining and entertainment are firmly on the agenda, and guests with dogs and / or children can watch them play in the sunshine as lunch sizzles away on the grill.

Brixham is one of Devon’s most popular holiday destinations and it’s easy to see why. With a working harbour and famous fish quay, freshly caught local seafood graces many of its restaurants’ menus including Rockfish, Simply Fish, Beamers and Alberos. The town is also awash with independent shops, cafes and bakeries, with The Wine Loft a must-visit spot for anyone who enjoys speciality wines and deliciously paired nibbles. The coast path makes a lovely day out whether walking up to Berry Head Nature Reserve or down to the coves at Fishcombe and Churston, and visitors with pushchairs or limited mobility can enjoy a gentle stroll along the Breakwater; an ice cream in hand of course!

Welcome to Brixham

There’s a nostalgic feeling to Brixham holidays that makes them feel a world away from the daily grind; a friendliness from the locals who call the town home as well as a tangible connection to its seafaring past. This picturesque town perched quietly on Devon’s south coast is still a bustling fishing port, where clusters of colourful cottages in every shade of the rainbow seemingly tumble down the hill towards the harbour’s quay, with boats and trawlers offloading their daily hauls ready to be transformed into the local restaurants’ ‘catch of the day’.

Brixham stay
4.7/5

An excellent property to explore Brixham and surrounding areas. Very comfortable with all amenities provided for. Children loved the movie room and had a nice garden for barbecues in the summer. An easy walk in to Brixham harbour and good parking space available.

Disappointed
3.5/5

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the most recent reviews for this property - in that it needs some TLC. The property isn't awful - far from it, and we really enjoyed our stay. However, the niggles started to add up over the course of the week. This made for a slightly disappointing experience overall. When you enter the property, you are immediately faced with a skirting board covered in some fairly significant paint chips (presumably from people bashing their luggage against it). It's only a small thing, but it's not a great first impression and it almost sets the tone for the rest of the property. A lick of paint would make a huge difference here - as it would in other areas. The outdoor furniture needs to be replaced, one of the window panes in the living area has blown and needs to be replaced, the rug in the living area is on its last legs and needs to be replaced, one of the upstairs blinds (in the bedroom facing the garden) is broken and needs to be replaced, and there was an unpleasant damp smell downstairs. We were also disappointed with the cleanliness of the property. There were cobwebs all over the property (around light fittings and radiators) and we had to re-wash the cutlery and glasses. There were also other niggles such as no toilet brush or hand towel in the upstairs bathroom (which is the main bathroom in the property). None of the issues are unsurmountable and many are easily fixed, but they take the shine off of the property. In terms of positives, it's in a great location (a 5/10 minute walk from the town and harbour), there is a great view of the harbour from the living area, parking is great, the rear garden is extremely secure and the living area and kitchen (in particular) are very nicely done. The property isn't lacking in any way, but it needs some TLC to make it a top quality option once again.

Colin, 16 Aug 2024

Hi Colin, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for the valuable feedback. Since your stay we have repainted the inside of the property including the skirting board to ensure guests first impression is improved! The outdoor furniture and carpet is in the process of being replaced shortly, the window and blind replacement will also be looked into. A ventilation system has also been put in to ensure they are no damp smells in the property, we have passed over your feedback regarding the cleanliness. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the location and views from the property. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Best wishes, The Luxury Coastal Team

Good location but lots of TLC needed
2.7/5

Good location and the potential to be a perfect property with an attractive garden. But cleanliness was poor the carpets needed a good hoover and there was tar on the lounge floor which I believe originated on the balcony, and there was lots of dust around. The garden needed lots of attention, the lawn was mown during our stay but there was lots of weeds growing between slabs and along the borders. The balcony which had beautiful views was dirty I had to remove a dead bird and dog poo both of which had been there for some time. The balcony furniture was covered in cobwebs and two of the chairs were broken. The rail on the back stairs was broken but after reporting twice this was repaired.

Julie, 01 Jul 2024

Hi Julie, thank you for taking the time to leave a review, as you know, we have been in touch with you whilst you were away and since your return. We were very sorry to learn of the problems that you encountered during your stay and the local contact came out to assist you and make right some of the issues so that you could still enjoy your stay, including fixing the broken rail. The owner and the local contact are working hard to rectify everything else that couldn't be sorted during your stay, including replacing the broken chairs . We are pleased to hear you liked the location. Best wishes, The Luxury Coastal Team.

Time for a refresh
3.5/5

The layout of upstairs is great, but all the paintwork is in need of a refresh. The balcony is a lot narrower and outdoor furniture should be replaced with all weather furniture and give the it some general TLC. Downstairs is a wasted space. It's smells damp, even leaving doors open to get some air circulation. The back garden is a gem. It's secure for your children or furry child, not overlooked. The access to it again needs TLC. Get rid of the weeds. Sort out the wobbly railings and paint up with some colour. We were very lucky with weather and spend most of our evenings enjoying the quiet and sunshine in the garden.

Michelle, 21 Jun 2024

Hi Michelle, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for passing over feedback, this is always welcomed and appreciated. The painting is booked in to be done and the garden furniture is being looked at for replacing. When passing over the feedback to the housekeeping team they did mention you spoke with them but did not bring up any issues which if you had may of allowed them to rectify some of the issues. Best wishes, The Luxury Coastal Team

Great house in a good location
5/5

Great house in a good location, close to the harbour, beach and seapool with parking at the property and a nice garden. The bedrooms are all a good size with plenty of storage The house is well equipped and comfortable and we had a great week with decent weather. We loved the Berry Head Hotel and also the Cafe, lovely food and fantastic views. Can also recommend the Liberty cocktail / gin / tea palace in the harbour, they do a very nice crab sandwich. St Mary’s beach is also worth a visit. We also went to Paignton which is close by for the funfair and the pier and beaches. When we arrived the twin beds in the downstairs bedroom were not configured into a double as requested, I emailed the company and they responded immediately, the housekeeper contacted me and came to the house and it was sorted straight away, great service.

Ideal location
4.7/5

The house was a lovely size and we had plenty of room for the 6 of us and the dog. The only downside was that I noticed a few places that I felt wasn't quite clean enough, and it would have been nice to have notice that we needed to bring some extra dishwasher tablets and toilet roll. Other than that I would book again and just bring the extras that I felt we needed. Great stay.

Needs some improvement
3.7/5

Like other comments there is a damp smell on the lower floor. There is a drainage problem, the drain overflows outside of the back door. This was reported on the arrival day and visit promised but no one turned up. The rear garden is difficult to access and this should be on the description. The property needs a bit of Paint especially around the lower areas. Upstairs is modern and comfortable. Location is close to the local amenities.

Guest, 25 Aug 2023

Hi Lee, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your stay at The Retreat, Brixham. We are so sorry to hear of the damp smell, the owner is exploring other options to ventilate the property to ensure this get rectified and is also repainting the property shortly. The roof was recently cleaned, it would seem some moss was clogged in the drains and we do apologise that this wasn't rectified during your stay. We are pleased to hear that the location was great for you close to the local amenities and that the upstairs of the property was modern and comfortable for you. We do hope to welcome you to stay with Luxury Coastal again in the future. Best Wishes, The Luxury Coastal Team
